Founded in the year 1899 as Societe Renault Freres by the three
Renault brothers - Louis, Marcel and Fernand, Renault S.A. is a
multinational car manufacturing company based in France. Although,
officially, the company's foundation stone was laid in 1899, the first
car to be sold with the Renault badge can be traced back to the year
1898. This first Renault car, which was called as the Renault Voiturette
1CV was designed and built by Louis Renault himself. Being a brilliant
young engineer of his time, Louis had created several models of his own
even before he joined hands with his brothers to bring the Renault car
company into being, the first of which was the Voiturette, later bought
by a friend of the founding brothers' father.
By the time 1903 dawned, Renault had started manufacturing engines of its own design, and within a span of two years from then, the company had succeeded in making its first big sale when the Societe des Automobiles de Place bought an entire fleet of Renault AG1 cars to convert them into taxis. The year 1908 proved to be a major milestone in the history of Renault cars, when the less-than-a-decade-old automaker crossed the production mark of 3,575 units, claiming the top spot, in terms of volume, amongst the car-manufacturers of France.
Apart from car manufacturing, this French auto-giant has also been an active participant of the motor racing sport right from its very early days, a major attraction towards the activity being the immense popularity that it provided. Beginning with the founding members, Louis and Marcel Renault, themselves racing their own vehicles and succeeding wonderfully in the first city-to-city race organised in Switzerland, to the glorious victory that the Renault AK 90CV brought Ferenc Szisz in the inaugural Grand Prix motor racing event, right up to the 2010 Formula One race where Renault powered the winning team, the Red Bull Racing, there have been countless racing events and championships over the past decades where the winner's trophy has had the name of Renault etched over it.
The maiden venture that Renault made in the Indian car-market was its partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra, which resulted in the formation of Mahindra Renault Limited in 2005 and the launch of the first of the Renault cars in India, the Logan, in May 2007. Although this JV came to an end in February 2010, the Logan continued to be manufactured by Mahindra, with Renault supporting it with some key components of production. The new and immensely improved version of Renault Logan which was thus formed is an extremely popular choice of Indian men in sedans today and is currently known by the name of Mahindra Verito.
Following this break-up, the car-major from France went on to re-establish itself in the country and laid the foundation for Renault India Private Limited in October 2010. Headquartered in the Mumbai city, Renault in India has production facilities located in Tamil Nadu, one of which is the unit that was set up jointly by Renault India and Nissan India as part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance operations in Chennai in March 2010. Capable of chucking out as many as 400,000 vehicles every year, this particular facility, along with its staggering production capacity, is shared equally by the two owner companies. Not only that, in September 2008, Renault inaugurated its satellite global vehicle design studio in Mumbai, which was just the fifth of its kind. Apart from the manufacturing base, the French automaker also has a pretty widespread network of dealerships and service centers in the country, which presently comprises of at least 60 touch points across 16 states and 2 Union Territories.
After Renault India Private Limited started its operations in 2010, the first car to be rolled out of its state-of-the-art factories was the ravishing Renault Fluence sedan, in May 2011. In the September that followed, the SUV Koleos appeared on the launch stage and proved to be a great hit with the Indian masses, becoming the first member of the SUV segment to cross the 120 bookings mark in the launch month itself. After that, the automaker never turned back. In fact, it went right ahead and gave the Indian car-industry what will always be remembered as one of the most terrific success stories of all time - the sensational Renault Duster, in July 2012. With such spectacular rides starring on its lineup, Renault India today offers a total of 5 car models, namely Renault Pulse, Renault Scala, Renault Duster, Renault Fluence and Renault Koleos.
The fate of every passenger car in India, except for the luxury segment, depends greatly on the price tag that comes attached to it. And the decision-makers at Renault are well aware of that. That's the reason why every car that walks out of its stables is able to give such a tough fight to its competitors on the price scale. Be it hatchbacks, sedans or sports utilities, Renault cars in India are known for their aggressive pricing and are widely appreciated for it. At present, the one member of this Franco-Indian clan that gets tagged with the smallest price tag amongst all its siblings is Renault Pulse which comes priced at a sum of Rs 4,44,000.
Right from its very early days, Renault has been famous for its world-class innovations and the superb technological tools that it incorporated in its offerings. Right from the very first automobile engines that it began to manufacture in 1903, to the next-generation X-Tronic Continuously Variable Transmission system that it has been the first automaker to introduce in its cars in India, Renault has never ceased to innovate and incorporate better and smarter tools and technologies. Nor has it ever failed in pricing its brilliant creations aggressively. At present, the most highly priced car model that features on its fleet in India is Renault Koleos with a price rating of Rs 23,99,000.
If there is one thing other than price that holds the power to change the fate of a car in the Indian automobile market, it is the fuel-economy that the car promises to deliver. and very understandably so. In a country like India, where fuel prices and their unpredictable jumps are one of the worst worries of the common man, fuel-economy is bound to have a major control over the sales records of automobiles. Thankfully, Renault cars in India have been able to put up a pretty good front on this field, mostly standing neck to neck with, if not a step ahead of, their competitors. Currently, Renault Pulse, priced at Rs 4,44,000, is the model that offers the best mileage returns in the entire lineup of Renault in India.
