Ford Motor Company set up its office on Indian shores in the year 1995. The Indian arm of the American auto giant Ford India Private Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary, and is focused on the manufacturing and sale of automobiles and engines made at its modern manufacturing facilities. The parent company was founded by Henry Ford in 1906 and was initially also invested in the production of heavy trucks, tractors and automotive components. While Ford India Private Limited's modern run started in 1996, the first Ford car in India was the Model A. While the Ford car was launched in 1907, FIPL did not start production in India until 1926. However, the company was shut down in 1954 due to the heavy losses they were incurring. Ford India Private Limited came back to life via a joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra. Christened Mahindra Ford India Limited, it was a 50-50 venture between the two companies and was formed in October 1995. Ford then increased its interest to 72 per cent in March 1998, and consequently, renamed the company Ford India Private Limited.

The Indian arm of the Ford Motor Company has successfully sold a braod range of cars under its marque. Starting with the Ford Escort, which was the first of the Ford cars to be produced in India, which was replaced by another Ford car in India, i.e. Ford Ikon in the year 2001. Ever since then, Ford India Private Limited has added a number of Ford cars to its India portfolio, including, Fusion, Fiesta, Mondeo, and Endeavour. But there is one Ford car that earned a special place in the Indian hearts, i.e Ford Figo. Specially designed and priced for the mass Indian market, the company launched its first made-for-India compact car on March 9, 2010. While the new urban SUV Ford EcoSport was also added to its portfolio in 2012, Ford is also planning launch eight new vehicles by 2015.

Ford India Private Limited's main manufacturing facility is located near Chennai and can produce up to 200, 000 Ford cars on a three-shift basis. The company has also invested $1 billion for a new contemporary plant at Sanand, Gujarat, which is expected to be up and running by 2014.
