The BMW 6 Series is a range of executive coupés produced by the
German automaker, BMW. The first was the E24, being derived from the
first generation 7 Series, the BMW E23. The E24 was launched in 1976 to
replace the 3.0CS & 3.0CSi (E9). 14 years later, in 2003, BMW
released the all new E63/E64 which was available as a coupé and
convertible, based on the chassis of the E60 5 Series sedan. Models were
the 645Ci (later replaced with the 650i) and the 630i, while the
highest performance model is the BMW M6. The third generation F12 and
F13 6 series were released in 2011 for the 2012 model year, sharing a
platform and some engines with the 7 Series (F01) and 5 Series (F10),
and introducing a four-door coupé (fastback sedan) style. BMW unveiled
information and pictures in September, 2010 of the Concept 6 Series,
which was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The third generation
BMW F12 (coupé) and F13 (convertible) were released as 2012 models at
the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show and New York Auto Show. BMW revealed the
6-Series Convertible on November 18, 2010. The vehicle is powered by two
petrol engines and a diesel engine - a 6-cylinder, twin power turbo
engine which will produce 320bhp (239 kW) at 5800rpm and the 650i will
be powered by a V8, twin turbo engine which will produce 407bhp (303 kW)
at 5500rpm. The 640d is powered by an I6 twin scroll turbocharged
diesel engine producing 313bhp (233 kW) at 4400rpm. The folding top is
still fabric as compared to the E93 3 Series convertible which is
equipped with a metal roof. Both the 640 and the 650 are available in
BMW's all-wheel drive layout as the 640ix and 650ix. Initially announced
in December 2011, and on display to the public at the 2012 Geneva Motor
Show, BMW extended the 6 Series range with a four-door saloon to
provide a rival to the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS. Initially shown as
the Gran Coupe Concept in 2010, which was based on the 2007 CS Concept,
the Gran Coupe is available in 640i, 640d and 650i derivatives. The
650i's V8 now produces 444bhp (331 kW). Till date BMW Group has
invested more than Rs 180 Crores in India. The wide range of BMW
activities in India include the establishment of a production plant in
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, parts warehouse in Mumbai and development of a
dealer organisation across major metropolitan centres of the country.
Though the Chennai plant, at the moment, is not producing the 6 series,
it has future plans for it as the FR layout of the 6 series is more
suited to the Indian sub-continent. The Grand Tourer class of the 6
series is essential in the future development of the Indian BMW centre.
BMW 6 Series Mileage
The fuel economy of BMW 6 Series overall (i.e. coupe
and convertible) is 7.94 kmpl in petrol and 9.52 kmpl in diesel. The BMW
6 Series coupe returns a fuel economy of 7 kmpl on the highways,
whereas city mileage, as per standard city runs with the air-conditioner
on, for the BMW 6 Series coupe is 4.5 kmpl. The Average CO2 emission is
about 255.7 g/km. The top speed of 6 Series Coupe is 250 kmph (limited)
and it can accelerate from 0-100kmph in about is 4.9 seconds. The top
speed of 6 Series Coupe diesel is 250 kmph (limited), and the top speed
of 6 Series Convertible is 250 kmph (limited) as well.
BMW 6 Series Coupe and Convertible both have 8-cylinder
power units and 4.8-liter engine which gives a maximum output of 360bhp
at 6,300rpm, and with a high torque output of 488.09Nm at 3,400 rpm.
Once again, the 8-cylinder power unit in the new BMW 6 Series marks the
pinnacle in superior power and performance. The latest BMW 650i Coupe
can accelerates to 100 kmph in 5.4 seconds while the BMW 650i
convertible completes the same task in 5.6 seconds. Both the 6 Series of
BMW Coupe and Convertible have the latest in unique driving
characteristics. They have a very active power unit and the rear wheel
drive. BMW follows the principal of light weight development and
guarantees high levels of stability. It has high performance brake
callipers with inner vented brake discs that make the brakes more active
and easy to apply.
The 6 series convertible accelerates from 0 – 100 kmph
in 5.0 seconds. It’s top speed is 250 kmph with a drag ratio of 0.32,
and a turning radius of 11.7 m. Whereas the Coupe version of the 6
Series takes just 0.3 seconds more to cover 0 -100 kmph. Its top speed
is a similar 250kmph as of the 6 Series Convertible
Looking at the outer side of the fresh 6-Series Gran Coupe, one can
easily notice the car’s outlines and exteriors that are inspired by the
ebbing of waves. This enhances the car’s external design to create a
feeling of sporty grace which emphasises the lavish appeal and elegant
look of the four-door BMW 6 Series. The car’s front end is filled by big
and diagonal BMW kidney grille plus a V-shaped top that flawlessly
combines with the silhouettes of the headlights, and air intakes. The
stripe at the front goes with strongly flared wheel arches and LED fog
lamps that are placed well plus a lower air pipe, split into three
sectors by model-specific L-shaped electroplated bars. The new BMW 6
Series Gran Coupe comes with Adaptive Xenon headlights as usual, while
car owners can add Adaptive LED Headlights as an option. As many car
critics say, the low and smooth lines of the BMW 6 Series are intensely
impressive. The passenger section appears very unique and enticing as
the window silhouette expands across the C pillar. The frame-less door
windows also add elegance and indicate a sporty look. To add more cachet
to the car’s design, the long side windows improve the use of light to
boost the feeling of spaciousness while inside the vehicles. The C
pillar includes an elite embossed Gran Coupe lettering behind the glass
found at the lower corner of each rear window. All of these features
symbolise the charming elegance of the BMW 6 Series. On a lateral view,
the model can be easily recognized by its four-door layout and its
wheelbase that is lengthier compared to any other BMW model. It also has
a longer passenger compartment and comes with side windows that feature
first-class Chrome Line Exterior surrounds. This feature also extends
at the back portion of the C-pillar. Viewing it from behind, the trunk
top and rear face both have adulate surfacing than most cars in this
series. The two-part L-shaped back lights share the outlines of the
car’s BMW 6 Series models. In addition to the horizontal and V-shaped
lines at the back, the BMW 6 Series suggests powerful and energetic
style. Another unique feature of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is the
third brake light that comes along the entire width of the back window
External dimensions of BMW 6 Series, overall length 4897.12mm,

BMW 6 Series is available with 2 engine options: 1
diesel and 1 petrol. The 4395cc, V8 petrol engine generates maximum
power of 407bhp with maximum torque of 600Nm. The 2996cc petrol engine
develops maximum power of 313bhp with maximum torque of 630Nm. The
6-Series Convertible is available in only petrol (powered by 4395cc, V8
petrol engine). The Coupe is available in both petrol and diesel. Gran
Coupe is available in only diesel. With the BMW 6 Series Coupé, long
distances become sprints. Just a brief press of the accelerator
unleashes the power of the V8 petrol engine. In every corner you sense
the close contact with the road; each acceleration releases the
captivating and sonorous sound of the 8 cylinders. Make travelling your
favourite sport: the V8 engine with petrol direct injection and
TwinPower Turbo accelerates with an outstanding 330 kW (450bhp) and a
maximum torque of 650Nm from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. As
befits its performance, the V8 petrol engine is thrifty – using an
average of 8.9 to 8.6 l/100 km with combined CO2 emissions of 206 to
199g/km. The 8-speed Sport automatic transmission Steptronic keeps the
engine in the optimum revving range and shifts almost imperceptibly
while offering you supreme travelling comfort. Centrally fitted exhaust
turbochargers in the V of the cylinder banks permit an especially
compact engine design and hence a low weight. The combination of
systematic lightweight chassis construction and optimised aerodynamics
produces unique agility, perfect road-holding and absolutely precise
handling. Dynamic Driving Control gives the BMW 6 Series Convertible
even more sporting character at the touch of a button. The result is a
more spontaneous engine response, sportier gear shifts and a tighter
setting for the steering. The optional Adaptive Drive also stiffens the
chassis and offers the additional COMFORT mode.
The new BMW 6 Series comes loaded with some really
cool gadgets like heads up display in full colour and stats, night
vision with infra-red camera, Bluetooth office and Driver assistance and
parking assistance systems. All of these features are a state of art
hi-tech gadgets with advance monitoring and controlling features.
The BMW 6 Series Coupe front and rear tyre dimensions
are 225/55 R17 Y and 225/55 R 17 Y. Wheel dimension and material front
and rear end are 8J x17 inch, light- alloy. Whereas the Convertible
version measures 245/40 R19 front and 275/35 R19 rear and wheel
dimension and material front and rear are 8.5 J x19 inch light alloy and
9J x19 inch, light alloy.
The most dynamic and comfortable way to save: the
eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic not only ensures
incredibly swift changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it
also significantly reduces fuel consumption. Only the tachometer will
reveal how fast and seamlessly the new eight-speed sports automatic
transmission changes gear. The additional gears are finely graduated so
that the change from third to fourth gear, for example, takes place with
small rev intervals and the transmission process itself is barely
perceptible. At the same time, the engine is always held at the
performance level at which it can optimally utilise its strength. For
more dynamics, more comfort – and more efficiency. At higher speeds the
engine revs drop due to the eight gear, thus decreasing fuel
consumption, which is further reduced in the BMW 640i thanks to the
automatic transmission with Auto Start Stop function. The engine
switches of when the car stops and starts up again while your foot is
leaving the brake pedal. A touch of the paddle next to the gearshift
lever changes the level of driving pleasure from NORMAL to SPORT: the
engine responds more spontaneously to the accelerator and the
eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic lets the engine rev
high before quickly changing up a gear. At the same time it tightens
the setting of the steering. Touch the paddle again to enter the SPORT +
mode where the Dynamic Stability Control allows controlled drifting to
the limit. The currently active mode is permanently displayed underneath
the speedometer, and in the SPORT mode the drive train and chassis
settings can be quickly and individually configured using the iDrive
Controller for dynamic driving on badly surfaced roads for example. The
optional Adaptive Drive offers selectable chassis settings and the
additional COMFORT mode. Until now, braking meant giving away energy.
Brake Energy Regeneration puts an end to this by winning energy back
during braking to charge the battery. As soon as drivers take their foot
off the accelerator the generator is engaged and converts excess
kinetic energy into electrical energy. Once the battery is fully
charged, the generator is disengaged from the engine. This unburdens the
engine and reduces emissions. Fuel consumption savings means that there
is more power available for acceleration.

BMW 6 Series Interior
The inner design of BMW 6 Series is a signature of a perfect
mixture of elegance, luxury and force which leads to a harmonious
formation of the front and back seating. The driver-oriented floor and
the front passenger area are enclosed by sophisticated arched surfaces
and the roominess of the rear passenger partition that ensures refined
and luxurious cosiness in all driving situations. The wheelbase is 113
millimetres longer and gives way for extra legroom enjoyed by back-seat
passengers. The internal design impression that the BMW 6 Series Gran
Coupe has set forth ensures first-rate spatial variability. There is
plenteously more than enough space to easily accommodate two passengers
at the back. The five passenger capacity seating arrangement also gives
enough space for a third rear passenger on short journeys. The boot has a
capacity of 460 litres, which can be pushed up to 1265 litres because
of the folding rear-seat backs and the through-loading system.
Interior Comfort
BMW 6 Series has a luggage compartment that offers a convincingly
large amount of storage space whether the roof is open or closed and an
interior in which up to four people can travel comfortably even on long
journeys. The locking central armrest and two drink holders in the
central console offer ample storage space for all those indispensable
travel accessories. Larger items of luggage fit effortlessly into the
generous boot. With the roof closed, its 350 litres provide enough space
for two golf bags or up to five crates of water. When the roof is
opened, it folds away so compactly that you still have 300 litres of
stowage space. The BMW 6 Series Convertible becomes even more flexible
with Original BMW Accessories. Examples include the precisely fitted,
multifunctional luggage compartment mat with folding box and boot sill
protector. The rear-mounted transport platform conveniently carries two
bicycles for sporting performances away from the road. A click-on system
makes it easy to mount the platform on the car, with no tools required.
The boot lid remains easily accessible and the roof can still be opened
and closed. All of these features helped the system to win the red dot
award for innovative product design in 2009. The optional glass roof of
the BMW 6 Series Coupé offers a panorama-style view. Equipped with an
electric interior roof liner and a lift function, it provides a great
deal of light for the inside together with a pleasant feeling of
openness. Your iPhone has a secure and stable docking station in the
media snap-in adapter: thanks to the external aerial and the integrated
USB interface for connecting the music player, it guarantees convenient
musical enjoyment and an optimum network connection. You can store the
travel accessories you need and provisions for the trip in the storage
compartments in the central armrest and the drink holders in the centre
console. Large items of luggage have ample space in the boot with a
capacity of 460 litres. A change from road to Alpine piste sees the
optional ski bag come into its own. It can be easily used to stow away
one or two pairs of skis from the boot and disappears conveniently out
of sight when no longer required. Really bulky travel companions such as
a pair of bicycles can be carried on the rear-mounted transport
platform. The innovative click-on system allows them to be mounted in no
time at all and without any tools.
