Honda Amaze has been one of the most anticipated cars this year. Not just because it features the first diesel engine from Honda in the Indian automobile market but it also has the potential to do wonders for Honda India in terms of sales and the Indian automobile industry as a whole in terms of innovation. Honda Amaze is a real beauty in every way from a company, which won awards internationally for its technical excellence and manufacturing marvels. Honda was always among the few international companies, which actually succeeded in enjoying a constant and even ever increasing fan base and customer base in India. Honda City offered by the company still remains one of the most successful vehicles in its segment. Ever since the Amaze was launched it raised a lot of customers waiting for the launch so as to grab one of these economic luxury vehicles. As a vehicle it is certainly ahead of its contemporaries. It launched this vehicle specifically with the Indian demographic in mind and hence it was designed in different variants to cater all the requirements of the customers, who can choose their vehicle based on parameters such the fuel type, the additional enhancements such as keyless entry, anti lock braking system, electric brake force distribution, etc., The rather important part however remains the diesel engine option because by far this might be the most fuel efficient engine offered by an automobile in its segment, at least as far as Indian automobile industry is concerned. Honda Amaze is offered in two different engine variants which are equally competent in their own market. The vehicle is capable of producing enough power to carry on the entire automobile industry through new directions. More importantly, the diesel engine which is dubbed as i-DTEC engine is an innovation in the true sense. Diesel engines are not part of the major engineering advancements over years compared to their petrol siblings. Honda took the stand to create an efficient engine which can compete with the petrol counterparts and even offer better performance than them. Power of Honda Amaze

Honda Amaze indeed is a powerful car in its class. Since the vehicle is offered in two broad categories based on fuel types, the petrol version of the car is equipped with a 4-cylinder SOHC i-VTEC engine, which is capable of churning out 1198cc displacement while their siblings in the diesel category are powerful enough to offer a competitive 1498cc displacement with their four cylinder DOHC i-DTEC engine . The diesel segment however is blessed with a rather powerful engine as it is capable of producing enough torque sufficiently more than the petrol segment.

Honda Amaze is equipped with two engines which means the performance of the vehicle is divided into two categories. The speed offered by Amaze is really promising considering the class in which it is offered. It comes with a diesel engine of 1.5 litre capacity which is dubbed as the i-DTEC engine. This engine is capable of allowing the vehicle to ride at a top speed of 175kmph. The pick up of the vehicle is also promising at 12.5 seconds time to reach 100kmph mark from standstill. The 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine of the Amaze offers a top speed of 165kmph and the pick up of the vehicle is equally competitive at 100kmph from standstill time as a mere 13.3 seconds .

Honda Amaze Exteriors

Honda is always known for creating really beautiful vehicles at really economical prices. Focusing on the Indian automobile market, Honda adapted its exteriors and interiors to comfort the Indian automobile customers. The manufacturer also adapted itself to the Indian market by venturing into economical cars with luxury features. While most of the manufacturers focussed on creating either economical vehicles or just luxury vehicles, few players both domestic and international succeeded in offering a perfect blend of both of these in order to offer a strategical performance, luxury and elegance filled vehicle. The Amaze does look amazing. Suiting its name, the vehicle never ceases to amaze the customers at what it has to offer at the price it is being offered. It is based on the Brio platform and it is evident in the vehicle from a close inspection. The front fascia of the car depicts an authoritative design, which nonetheless remains appealing. The detailing on the front bonnet and front fender depict an aerodynamic appeal. The front fascia also depicts a large air intake grill under the headlamp cluster and the front grill. The air intake vents seem really futuristic with well designed and rendered strokes. The front grill offers an innovative appeal much was though reminiscent of the Honda Brio, it still has its unique features such as a dual chrome lining between the front grill. These two chrome lining are further embellished with the Honda logo. The air intake grills are large and extend to more or less the entire front bumper . The number plate is situated in the front bumper location. The front bonnet and has detailing which form a symmetric design which extends over the edges of the front grill and ends at the number plate on the front bumper. The prominent design makes the Amaze highly visually appealing. The front headlamp cluster is situated at the front corners. The headlamps are prominent and are embossed in the design. The front bumper has a subtle design border over it which extends over the entire design extending through the side wheel arches. The side profile of the vehicle is remarkably well sculpted. The side profile has well rendered detailing on the doors which offer an aerodynamic design. The wheel arches in the side are a slightly straight line structure. The side wheel arches of Amaze tried to avoid the usual bulky curvy designs, which other vehicles in the same segment are slightly inclined to. The side profile of Amaze offers a simple rear boot extended slightly more rather than its contemporary vehicles in the segment like Maruti Swift Dzire which has a rather massive boot. The windows of the car are in a structured design with a very pleasingly designed size and dimensions. The detailing on the doors are distributed as an abstract art with a rendering line extending from the wheel arch extending to the rear seat row door.
The other render starts from the bottom end of the front door in a two parts with one of them extending towards the rear wheel arch. The rear wheel arch of the vehicle is perfectly designed with a simple damp structure that does not specifically seem protruding or inward in anyway. Just the right amount of elements in the right spaces and in the right way. Honda Amaze has a beautiful rear design. The tail lamps are well designed with the boot extending from the side profile edges to the boot door. The renderings in the rear fascia are also impressive. The rear design of the Amaze is strikingly reminiscent of Honda City, which can imply the it being an economic alternative to the highly successful Honda City. After the pricing was announced on 12th April, the prices are found to be aptly positioned to be between 4,99,000 rupees and 7,60,000 rupees which still ends up seeming an economic offering . The beauty of Amaze is clearly evident in the smooth design of rear section that seamlessly extends through edges with efficiency. The chassis is offered a better protection with the under-body equipped with a lower bumper. The sturdy build is undoubtedly best suited for the Indian roads and this also allows the vehicle to go even in the roughest terrains of the Indian geographic such as the rural scene or even the hilly areas. It does not have a lot of clutter around the design and it is solely based on offering basic features and simple aesthetics without bulking the vehicle with all the detailing, renderings and excessive curves in the framework.

Honda definitely did not let the compact name creep in the interior appeal. The vehicle is equipped with enough thigh support to allow passengers to have a comfortable ride. It also has a really spacious and generous knee room arguably best in class and the head room which should be sufficient for any average passenger. The adjustable steering wheel can be tilted based on the drivers position helping in offering a comfortable ride .
Interior Measurement:
The Amaze though did not have a significant difference in its external measurements than the Brio such as height, wheel base, length and width, the vehicle does have a difference in terms of the weight of the vehicle. It is because of the fact that the 1.5 litre diesel engine offered in the Honda Amaze is undoubtedly a very light weighted engine reducing any additional weight of the engine from that department. But the additional machinery sure does increase the weight. The kerb weight of the Amaze vary model to model. The kerb weight for the EX variant is 955kgs, 965kgs for S as well as the VX. The diesel variants S and VX are offered at 1075kgs . The Amaze E diesel version weighs 1060kgs and the EX diesel version has1065kgs.The car is offered in automatic transmission for the petrol versions which are further divided as 1010kgs for the Amaze S and 1005kgs for the VX. The Amaze has a 1.2-litre capacity for the 4-cylinder, SOHC, i-VTEC petrol engine while the 4-cylinder, DOHC, i-DTEC engine is offered with a 1.5-litre capacity . The displacement of the engines is comparatively more in the diesel variants at 1498cc, while the petrol variants measure at 1198cc. The power delivered by the engines is also adequate with petrol engine bringing out a power of 86.7bhp at 6000rpm and the same for the diesel variant is an impressive 98.6bhp at 3600rpm. The Amaze is also capable of offering a promising torque with 109Nm at 4500rpm for the petrol variants and 200Nm at 1750rpm for the diesel variants.

It comes with some of the beautiful features which extend from the exteriors, pass on to the interiors and are reflected in the performance. The exteriors are further enhanced in terms of performance as well as appeal with the 175/65 R14 tyres .

Braking & Handling

The Amaze is offered with some of the most interesting and efficient machinery and features, which make it an alluring option. The front section of the Honda Amaze comes with disc brakes while the rear section is equipped with drum brakes .

Handling & Safety

The Honda Amaze hits the right notes in terms of handling and safety. Though the vehicle comes with a 165mm ground clearance it turns up useless if the vehicle fails to offer the level of safety required. Honda Amaze comes with McPherson Strut suspension in the front and torsion beam suspension in the rear. This is a perfect pack for offering a smooth drive. The vehicle comes with ABS, EBD, engine immobiliser, fog lamps, keyless entry system and the central locking all of which are distributed in several models . The high end VX version however comes with front dual SRS airbags which offer a really promising safety provision for the vehicle.

 

BMW 6 Series

The BMW 6 Series is a range of executive coupés produced by the German automaker, BMW. The first was the E24, being derived from the first generation 7 Series, the BMW E23. The E24 was launched in 1976 to replace the 3.0CS & 3.0CSi (E9). 14 years later, in 2003, BMW released the all new E63/E64 which was available as a coupé and convertible, based on the chassis of the E60 5 Series sedan. Models were the 645Ci (later replaced with the 650i) and the 630i, while the highest performance model is the BMW M6. The third generation F12 and F13 6 series were released in 2011 for the 2012 model year, sharing a platform and some engines with the 7 Series (F01) and 5 Series (F10), and introducing a four-door coupé (fastback sedan) style. BMW unveiled information and pictures in September, 2010 of the Concept 6 Series, which was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The third generation BMW F12 (coupé) and F13 (convertible) were released as 2012 models at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show and New York Auto Show. BMW revealed the 6-Series Convertible on November 18, 2010. The vehicle is powered by two petrol engines and a diesel engine - a 6-cylinder, twin power turbo engine which will produce 320bhp (239 kW) at 5800rpm and the 650i will be powered by a V8, twin turbo engine which will produce 407bhp (303 kW) at 5500rpm. The 640d is powered by an I6 twin scroll turbocharged diesel engine producing 313bhp (233 kW) at 4400rpm. The folding top is still fabric as compared to the E93 3 Series convertible which is equipped with a metal roof. Both the 640 and the 650 are available in BMW's all-wheel drive layout as the 640ix and 650ix. Initially announced in December 2011, and on display to the public at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, BMW extended the 6 Series range with a four-door saloon to provide a rival to the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS. Initially shown as the Gran Coupe Concept in 2010, which was based on the 2007 CS Concept, the Gran Coupe is available in 640i, 640d and 650i derivatives. The 650i's V8 now produces 444bhp (331 kW).  Till date BMW Group has invested more than Rs 180 Crores in India. The wide range of BMW activities in India include the establishment of a production plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, parts warehouse in Mumbai and development of a dealer organisation across major metropolitan centres of the country. Though the Chennai plant, at the moment, is not producing the 6 series, it has future plans for it as the FR layout of the 6 series is more suited to the Indian sub-continent. The Grand Tourer class of the 6 series is essential in the future development of the Indian BMW centre.

BMW 6 Series Mileage

The fuel economy of BMW 6 Series overall (i.e. coupe and convertible) is 7.94 kmpl in petrol and 9.52 kmpl in diesel. The BMW 6 Series coupe returns a fuel economy of 7 kmpl on the highways, whereas city mileage, as per standard city runs with the air-conditioner on, for the BMW 6 Series coupe is 4.5 kmpl. The Average CO2 emission is about 255.7 g/km. The top speed of 6 Series Coupe is 250 kmph (limited) and it can accelerate from 0-100kmph in about is 4.9 seconds. Power of BMW 6 Series

BMW 6 Series Coupe and Convertible both have 8-cylinder power units and 4.8-liter engine which gives a maximum output of 360bhp at 6,300rpm, and with a high torque output of 488.09Nm at 3,400 rpm. Once again, the 8-cylinder power unit in the new BMW 6 Series marks the pinnacle in superior power and performance. The latest BMW 650i Coupe can accelerates to 100 kmph in 5.4 seconds while the BMW 650i convertible completes the same task in 5.6 seconds. The 2996cc petrol engine develops maximum power of 313bhp with maximum torque of 630Nm. The 6-Series Convertible is available in only petrol (powered by 4395cc, V8 petrol engine). The engine switches of when the car stops and starts up again while your foot is leaving the brake pedal. Peugeot 508

The upcoming sedan Peugeot 508 is a large family saloon car. It was first launched in 2010 in global market; however, Indian entry is slated in the Auto Expo 2012. Being a marquee of PSA Peugeot Citroen, Peugeot shares the platform with Citroen C5 and other features with Citroen. Peugeot 508 has been voted as the Best New Car of 2011 at the Fleet World Honours 2011.
Peugeot 508 will be the first car by the company in India. With the sedan, the company will make its entry in the luxury car segment. Although, Peugeot came to India earlier also in association with Premier and brought Peugeot 307 model, the car maker had to leave due to labor issues in some time. This time around the company is coming alone and will hit bang-on. The French carmaker Peugeot has signed an agreement with the Gujarat government to invest Rs 4,000 crore in setting up a plant in the State. The car manufacturer views India as one of the most important and dynamic markets in the world and foresees to become the third largest automotive market by 2020. It is a possibility that till the facility is completely ready; the auto major could bring in the Peugeot 508 as a completely built Unit (CBU) in India.

Chevrolet Beat Diesel

With the recent rise in fuel prices the demand for Diesel cars has shot drastically, many car manufacturers are getting diesel versions of their models. The small car segment has few Diesel options and General Motors is taking advantage of this by introducing the Diesel version of their successful small car the Chevrolet Beat. Its been 16 years for GM in India and its journey has been with ups and downs. Things have never looked so good for GM India and they want to make the most of it by getting the Diesel version of the Beat to show their supremacy in the small car segment.

The Chevrolet Beat is currently available in 1.2liter Petrol and a LPG version. Things have changed since the Beat was launched about two years back and GM India too has tasted success in this period, they also invested heavily in setting up a brand new plant at Talegaon which is where the Beat’s diesel engine and the car will be built. GM India also has a plant at Halol in Gujarat. 

We drove the Beat Diesel in Goa to find out if it is the most fuel efficient small car currently. Read on to know all about the Beat Diesel.

Design – Exteriors

Getting the facts in line, the Beat was seen in the Hollywood movie `The Transformers` as a concept vehicle, not many vehicles make it to the production line looking exactly as they did in their concept version but the Beat is an exclusion. The concept Beat was shown to the media in 2007 and mostly all the designing stayed intact on the final production version of the Beat.

The Chevrolet Beat has always been a very futuristic looking car. The Beat Diesel is not cosmetically different from its Petrol sibling. The front of the Beat is largely taken by the huge split Chevrolet grill. The face of the Beat is further highlighted by the space age style headlamps that are perhaps the longest in size in the segment. The bonnet rises upwards towards the wind shield. The Beat’s front bumper houses large round fog lamps that have a chrome garnish. This combination of the Chevy grill with the large round fog-lamps combined with the XXL sized head lamps gives a Spacecraft like look to the face of the Beat.

The sides of the Beat gets a flat wheel fender along with body colored wing mirrors and the window sill that rises upwards as it goes towards the tail lamp. The Beat has a unique rear door handle that is placed vertically on the area where usually you have a quarter glasses. The rear of the Beat continues with the Space Age design theme, large twincept tail lamps with high rear bumper that has stop reflectors placed on them. The rear windshield has the De-fogger and rear wash-wipe feature that is real handy from our experience while driving the Beat Diesel on wet rainy roads of Goa. You also get a large body mounted rear spoiler that gives a sharp edge to the roof line at the back. The LT version of the Beat Diesel that we drove also has factory fitted silver colored roof trails that look sporty. The Beat Diesel drives on upsized tyres as compared to its Petrol brother, the tyre specs for are 165/65/R14 to make the Diesel Beat drive better. More on the drive part later. Another note worth change on the Beat Diesel is the increase of the ground clearance from 165mm on the Petrol Beat to 175mm on the Diesel version. The overall weight of the Beat Diesel is 1027kgs while the Petrol version weighs about 965kgs.

Interiors – Cabin

Everything remains the same on the inside of the Beat Diesel too, the Beat always had a nice cozy kind of cabin feel. The three spoke steering has is height adjustable and feels good to grip. The unique sports bike like digital instrument cluster with a soft blue back light looks sporty in the Beats cabin. This sporty speedo unit is column mounted and has a round speedo cluster on the left with a unique digital panel which displays the RPM, fuel level; clock and other tell tales on the right. The dashboard is on black with a grainy texture to it. Everything in here has a space age design to it, the center console on the Beat Diesel LT has a climate control and a MP3/FM player that also has an upfront USB and AUX port on the player. The soft blue backlit theme continues on the centre dash on the climate control and the music system display. The AC vents on the sides are closeable while the center ones are not. The bottle holders in the door pads hold one liter bottles easily while there are many cubby storage holes spread all around in the cabin. The Beat has a flat shaped gear changer that feels nice to grip, we would have liked a touch of chrome or aluminum on the shifter. Twin Can holders are just in front of the gear shifter. The front seats on the Beat offer good support and there is good leg room and headroom in the front. At the rear you get comfortable seats for two passengers ideally while a third one can fit in if needed, two head rests are standard on the LT version. The rear seats are comfortable and the seats are inclined for comfortable long drives. There is good leg and knee room at the rear for two passengers. The Beat Diesel has a boot space of 180 liters that can swallow two suitcases and a few hand bags easily.

Engine – Suspension – Drive

The heart of the Beat Diesel is what matters the most. GM India has spent a fortune in designing and developing the all new 1.0 XSDE SMARTECH Diesel engine for the Beat that was developed specially for India by GM Technical Center Bangalore and GM Power-train Europe.

The Chevrolet Beat Diesel is powered by an all new 936cc XSDE SMARTECH 3 cylinder Diesel engine; this engine makes 62.5 PS of power and has 160.3Nm of torque under its belt. GM engineers have used some latest technology on this engine. The engine is based on the popular Multi Jet (MJI) Diesel engine that was co-developed by GM and Fiat. The XSDE engine uses DOHC with 12 valves with a lot of light weight engine components being used to keep the overall weight low. A fixed geometry Turbocharger powers this engine. The engine uses an electrically controlled throttle body that also lessens in keeping vibrations and engine shakes. The intake manifold is made of light weight plastic material that’s been designed for low end torque. The XSDE engine is fed by a CRDI injection that works at 1600 bars. The cylinder block used on the XSDE engine is epoxy coated making its corrosion free.

How does it drive?

Fire the engine and it’s impossible to say that under the hood is a 3 cylinder diesel engine. This is one of the smoothest and most vibration free 3 cylinder diesel engines that any car model has currently. The use of light weight material and advanced engineering gone into this engine shows in a big way. The NVH levels are pretty low in the cabin and once the doors are shut it’s rather difficult to make out that this is a diesel car. The Beat Diesel gets a revised gearbox; the gear shifts are smooth and precise. The gear ratios are ideal for in city driving and tuned more for efficiency. Shift to the first gear and the Beat Diesel drives in a nice and sedate manner. The gear ratios are short ideally tuned for higher efficiency and intercity drives. The Fixed Geometry Turbo kicks in at the 1600 RPM and after this the speed builds on rather quickly. An intelligent Launch Support System on the engine detects if the car is climbing on gradients and delivers the torque accordingly. The mid end power delivery is good on the Beat Diesel while the low end torque is adequate for busy city roads. We managed to touch 145kmph on the Beat Diesel which should give you a picture of the capabilities of this engine. You can hardly hear the engine running while driving around the city and the cabin is super silent. On the highways the speed builds up evenly and once you cross the 60kmph speed the engine note is slightly heard. The Beat Diesel handles rather well partly because of the upsized tyres and also due to the new stiffened rebound tuned gas suspension that it now gets. The Beat Diesel drives over bad roads and pot holes in a more relaxed fashion absorbing the bumps. The increased ground clearance also helps things here. The new Electrical powered steering (EPS) works well and helps in keeping the Beat Diesel under control in any situation. The Beat Diesel drives and feels very nice at low and high speeds. Fuel efficiency on the Beat Diesel is good and GM India claims a fuel efficiency of 24kmpl on the Beat Diesel and we will surely examine that in our long term test.

GM India is also recommending a 15,000 KMS or 1.5 years Engine oil change interval to keep running costs low and also would be offering the Beat Diesel with an segment first 3years or 1,00,000 KMS warranty on the car and the engine.

Verdict

The Chevrolet Beat Diesel is a very good package overall in the small Diesel car segment. It’s got a very light weight, peppy yet efficient (24kmpl) Diesel engine that’s developed using the latest technology. The 3 cylinder Diesel engine is a gem with low NVH levels and near to zero vibration. The Beat Diesel is a fun to drive car in the city and it also does rather well on the highways at high speeds. The Chevrolet Beat has always been a smart looking space age small car and now with the new Diesel option it becomes a very desirable choice in the hot small car segment and also turns out to be a big threat to the likes of Ford Figo and Maruti Ritz Diesels.
